Drawing

These are the drawings I've done these past few weeks in order from oldest to newest.

Note: some of these are horrible, be warned
Getting warmed up for figure studies
First figure study
30 second pose studies, I enjoyed these

Drawing of above model
A0 Self portrait, I warned you... Drawing something this
HUGE from a small mirror is horrible, I hated doing it and it shows.

More recently, aka, today

Just did a quick study of my eye, wanted to make sure I knew the shape.

This looks so creepy on my screen...This is supposed to be a self portrait
and I enjoyed doing it. I don't care that it's only a face, I just like it.

Lost

Someone took my picture from the studio. I have no Idea who or where is is. I think it's just too early to say that it's stolen.

Gone.

Oh, well. Here's a nice song for you:

Rooibos & Honey

Tea break!
Wolfgang is watching you...

Black!

I'm in a good mood today, must be combo of not being able to go to University (transport issues), so sleeping late, walking around without pants, good music, a awesome date - 20110927 is a beautiful number - and being carefree for some odd reason...

Title makes sense now?

Pastel WIP Comparison

I added blues and yellows to the sleeve and it looks a lot less flat than it did this morning, or is that just me?

Pastel WIP 2

Pastel WIP 1

Pastel Progress

Here are some WIP shots of my current drawing in pastel. I take a photo every few steps for my own process; it helps me to spot faults.

This is my Pre-sketch. A2, charcoal and white pastel.
Concept to follow in a later blog.
The Workplace:
That thing on the wall is the biggest piece of paper I've ever seen; a 1m x 1.5m piece of 160g Fabriano

When I start drawing, I also start collecting the pastels/pencil/whatevers in my hand. This saves a lot of time.
I was unsure about jumping in with the pastels as this is the first time I've done anything serious with  them. I decided to do the first chunk in black and white, just to make myself feel better about the whole thing

I then added a mid-tone over the darkest parts and the parts that the mid-tone should be. I thought that leaving the dark parts flat black would make the picture look dull.

Adding the first layer of highlights...

Fixed the inconsistent shadows and did some other things I cant really remember

Starting with the top part of the dress. Photo showing the raw black pastel lines that will become shadows

Blended (and blurry!) poked in some highlights

Added highlights, fixed some shadows...

The face:

Note: I had absolutely no idea what I was doing here. I realized that, in my 12 years of drawing, I haven't done a single portrait in colour. So I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best.

Blocking in colour/light and shadow

Adding more colour

Blending...

And repeat

This is becoming a bit ridiculous...

Added white to get the right skin tone

Added shadows (cast by hair)

Darkened some shadows on the face and started with the neck

Blaended

More colour

Blend some more

Skin tone was too pale, added some yellow

Almost at my limit...

I'll stamp that as done, at least until something bugs me

Forgetfull - A project quark update

Ranting on this blog made it easier to get through the horror-turned-success that was my sculpture project see this post to read about the 'horror' part. I never updated on how it actually went. It was great, my friends pitched in and helped a lot, setting up the gazebo thing, making ads on main campus and urging people to join in. About 40 people did participate, I was hoping for 20 - 25.

It got quite overwhelming at one stage, I was inside welding pieces to the sculpture (a friend and I were taking turns, thanks Tamryn!) while one of my other friends was outside manning the free lemonade stand we has set up. Even the weather was on my side, it was a really hot day and people would do anything for some lemonade.

In the end I got 77%. And I'm proud. Could not have done this without the people that helped me and I really owe them.

The project has a blog: http://projectquark.blogspot.com/
